The B.S.B.A. program offers a mix of applied and theoretical courses. The objective of the program is to provide the analytical tools and skills necessary for careers in the financial services industry or functional area of financial management, as well as the theoretical basis for graduate study.
The program includes a broad core of lower division courses that comprise the AUM Core Curriculum and a business core curriculum that emphasizes a common body of knowledge underlying the successful practice of business administration. The finance core requires course work in finance management, asset and liability management, financial institutions and markets, and personal financial planning. These required finance courses offer an introduction to the financial services industry and the functions of the financial manager, commonly referred to as the practice of financial management. The functional area of financial management is primarily noted for financial analysis, working capital management, and capital budgeting. Elective finance courses permit individual students to develop a program for their specific interests in the financial services industry, emphasizing banking, insurance and risk management, personal financial planning, or real estate.
Presently, a cooperative agreement between Auburn University Montgomery and Alabama State University (ASU) utilizes the finance faculty of two undergraduate finance programs requiring cross enrollment for finance majors. The ASU finance program includes real estate courses from AUM, while the AUM finance program utilizes the money and banking, and investments courses at ASU.
The School of Business is fully accredited through the graduate level by the American Assembly of Collegiate School of Business (AACSB), the International Association for Management Education and is the largest school on campus.
The Department of Accounting and Finance is one of five departments in the School of Business and has highly qualified full-time faculty. Both an undergraduate major in finance and the M.B.A. finance option degree programs are offered. The department also sponsors a student chapter of the Financial Management Association (FMA).
